Guide#6 - Programs,Applications and Games
These are the programs that each of your computer should have:
Yahoo Messenger is the most popular instant messaging client and protocol provided by Yahoo!. Yahoo! Messenger is provided free of charge and can be downloaded and used with a generic “Yahoo! ID” which also allows access to other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail, where users can be automatically notified when they receive new email. Yahoo! offers PC to PC telephone, file transfers, webcam hosting, text messaging service, and chat rooms in various categories. It also offers (on Microsoft Windows) many unique features such as: IMVironments (customizing the look of Instant Message windows), address-book integration and Custom Status Messages. It was also the first major IM client to feature offline-messaging, BUZZing, music-status. Another recently added feature is customized avatars. However, some of these features are not available on other platforms
MSN Messenger was a free instant messaging client that was developed and distributed by Microsoft between 1999 and 2006 for computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system, and aimed towards home users. Amongst its users it is often referred to as “MSN,” though in Latin America and Spain it is known as “el Messenger,” as other instant messaging clients are less popular there. MSN Messenger is often used to refer to the .NET Messenger Service (the protocols and server that allow the system to operate) rather than any particular client. The business-oriented client for Windows, which also uses Microsoft’s .NET Messenger Service is called Windows Messenger. It is possible for virtually any computer with an Internet connection, Windows XP and Internet Explorer to connect to the Messenger Service by using MSN Web Messenger, or one of the unofficial equivalents (which have advantages such as compatibility with browsers other than IE, but do not have an interface that mimics the one of the MSN Messenger application).
Skype users essentially make telephone calls and video calls through their computer using Skype software and the internet. The basis of the system is free communication between users of Skype software; however the product also allows Skype users to communicate with users of regular landline and mobile telephones. This software is currently available free of charge and can be downloaded from the company website, but the software is proprietary and the Skype protocol is unpublished. The main difference between Skype and other VoIP clients is that Skype operates on a peer-to-peer model, rather than the more traditional server-client model. The Skype user directory is entirely decentralised and distributed among the nodes in the network, which means the network can scale very easily to large sizes (currently just over 100 million users) without a complex and costly centralised infrastructure.
The Chikka Messenger is truly instant messaging from your phone. It unifies your mobile phone number and instant messaging IDs and checks for online buddies with just one SMS message. It receives instant messages on your mobile when you’re away from your computer and sends multimedia messages from your PC to MMS-enabled mobile phones. Meanwhile, its Txt2Mail application lets you send and receive e-mail from mobile phone users. Chikka’s latest versions also deliver top-up credits to mobile subscribers on selected carriers.

I just want to say that the information here is very helpful. My suggestion is that any information posted be relative to the Philippines. Personally this would be helpful since I plan on moving there with my fiance in a couple years. A future article that would be helpful might deal with selecting an ISP and specifically ISPs in the Philippines. If anyone has information or links to share that would be great. I’m doing some research on my own and will share what I have. Just let me know how.
